O.W. Holmes & The John Lewis Academy for Social Justice hosted our first mental health series event

Last Friday, The Derrick James Family Foundation in collaboration with Principal Sharron Jackson of O.W. Holmes & The John Lewis Academy for Social Justice hosted our first mental health series event.  The guest speaker for this groundbreaking initiative was none other than the renowned mental health expert Dr. Jay Barnett.

Dr. Jay Barnett spoke to a packed auditorium filled with 195 black and brown young men in the 7th and 8th grade about the importance of mental health. The young men were engaged and attentive as they listed to Dr. Jay speak life into their current lived experiences. Dr. Jay Barnett’s message was powerful, transformative and inspiring.

We believe in communicating the importance of mental health to our youth. It is our desire to create safe spaces, provide resources to help establish healthy ways address their mental health so they can maximize their potential.

We like to send a special “thank you” to professional fighter Ryan Garcia. We would also like to thank our donors that help make our work in the community possible. Lastly, we would like to thank our team of advisors who work to ensure the success of our foundation.
